A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB … THE VSR SERIES
The new look V8 Trophy will literally be climbing a mountain, with a visit to Lincolnshire’s Cadwell Park on a packed multi national, circuit racing calendar for 2008, With a move away from oval racing due to the lack of dates offered by circuits, the decision has been made by the series organisers to join with the VSR Super Silhouette Series - comprising 2Litre, V6 and V8 cars, to form an awesome grid of V Power.
Running under the “VSR SERIES” banner the Ascars will be the “VSR V8 Trophy” for 2008, the VSR Series will run over 10 weekends with 22+ rounds, Provisional grid numbers should easily see the VSR Series regain its Championship status in 2009.
The outline plan is for the all the classes to be racing close together by means of the use of a restrictor plate, as used in the NASCAR Sprint Cup in the USA. With restricted power the series will also adopt a National B licence requirement. There will also be a change of tyre supplier for the Ascars, Hoosier Tires stepping in, and for the first time a wet tyre will also be supplied to accommodate the full range of our wonderful British weather!
Although it may seem like a big change for the Ascars, the chassis are already raced on road courses in the USA, and American contacts have already been very helpful with suggestions for a quicker transition onto the road course set up. Tentative suggestions have already been mentioned for a Trans-Atlantic Challenge.
The series two front men, John Clark and Duane Kidd sealed the collaboration with a hand shake on the evening of Wed 23rd January 2008, John, who first suggested the idea to the BRSCC before Christmas said “This could be the most awesome spaceframe series ever, with a variety of cars from the nimble but spectacular 2Litres through to the V6 coupe’s and saloons, right up to the groundshaking V8s. With the backing of the countries top club The BRSCC, this years series will be next years championship. The ultimate aim is to have a standalone 2Litre class with the V6 and V8s together in their class, a 4 race program to hit the circuits in 2009. Joining the Super Silhouette classes with the thundering American V8s is going to be big. We are all working together for a great 2008” Duane added “John’s absolutely right in his comments. The Ascars, as a series know its going to be a big change going to circuit racing, but with John’s help and the VSR series experience it will be much easier. With multiple classes on track, it will provide full track action and will ensure a good racing spectacle for drivers and spectators alike.”
When pressured on the question of a lack of any oval race dates for the Ascars, Duane said “With a change of policy towards us, the last two years have been very hard to move forward on the oval, the strength we have as a series now, is that those who are in it want to be there and want it to work, such dedication led to our best grid since 2005 at the last meeting of 2007. But I now believe the decision not to allow us to run on the oval this year had been made before the final event, so that is that, a sad loss”
